The Architect


Anastasios Metaxas (February 27, 1862 – January 28, 1937) was a Greek architect. He studied at the University of Dresden and he was best known for being chosen by George Averoff to restore the Panathinaiko Stadium for the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens.

Upon his return in Greece he stood out as one of the representatives of the Neoclassicism. He was hired by the King as one of the architects of the Palace.

He designed and constructed the Shooting Center of Kallithea.
Many historical buildings in Athens were restored or expanded based on his own designs, such as The Harokopou Mansion (at Vas. Sofias Ave.), that now houses The Benaki Museum, The Presidential Mansion (at Irodou Attikou Str.), The Orphanidis House (at Amalias Ave.), The Merlin de Douai Mansion (at Vas. Sofias Ave.), that houses The Embassy of France since 1896, the Eginitio Hospital (at Vas. Sofias Ave.), The Palace of Prince Nikolaos (at Vas. Sofias Ave.), that now houses The Embassy of Italy and many more.
He also designed the Church of Saint Nicolas (at Asklipiou St.) and the church of Saint Gerasimos at the island of Keffalonia.

He loved shooting and he competed in 4 Olympic Games (1896 – Athens – 4th, 1906 – Athens – silver, 1908 – London – bronze, 1912 – Stocholm – 6th).

At his late life he was involved in politics under The People’s Party. He was elected as a senator of Attikoviotia at the elections of 4th of August 1929 and as a congressman at the elections of 9th of June, 1935.

He died on January 28, 1937.

On Sunday 4th of June, 1939 it was the unveiling of a monument on his memory, at the entrance of the Panathinaiko Stadium.
